Japan's Chemical Disaster
From what I have watched, Japan started to have this problem ever since they had their largest GNP attainment in 1968. At that current time the Kamioka mine had already started their mining industry. Given the technology back then, there was no safety measure with regards to chemical waste handling which later on caused sulfur and lead disease from rice and water contamination.
On 1908, the Minamata disease is now the "famous" disease at the time. the Minamata disease's main problem is that one a person is infected, the chemical contamination damages the brain and renders loss of balance to the person. People who had this kind of disease were contamination victims from sea food poisoning. Later on on 1957, the cause was finally known and it was Mercury.
Several other diseases broke out that's why the government finally issued a law for environmental safety on 1967; however this did not thoroughly solve anything. Because of this wide spread people power was made by the Japanese citizen on 1967 to 1969, it was also then when the cause of Itai Itai disease was announced.
Anti-pollution diet was made in 1970 and around that time, plaintiffs won the case and had damage compensation law for the victims enacted.
A country can never compensate for the lives lost just like after a war. But this is a hard lesson learned that the environment is extremely important and not only that, the environment has ties with everyone living in it, which means that if we tamper the environment, we tamper the lives of people.
